In an age where tracks and a click help guide the music, learning to improvise is still a valuable and necessary skill.

Let me provide you guys with an example.

The moment you see in this clip is unrehearsed. The band had some idea of how long the pastor will talk, but we have no idea how she ends. All we know is what progression of the song we will be playing during that time.

Because of this factor, I ensure that I’m following the MD & the speaker for directions.

I'm relying on Kyle (the MD) to guide us through this point, and I’m watching the speaker's body language while listening to her voice so I can appropriately build when she does.

The intensified focus on these two people provides the opportunity to make educated musical decisions to help progress the dynamics into a proper build that takes us into the song's reprise.

It’s the little things that sometimes no one sees that can help a momenta transition smoothly.
