iPhone Audio VS. Recorded Audio

The first microphone was patented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell.

Since then, we have seen so many advancements in microphone technology.

One is the microphone we use for our phones, and the other is for live/studio settings.

Let’s talk about both.

The iPhone microphone has a low SPL or Sound Pressure Level. This low SPL means the mic’s ability to handle high-decibel noises is not good. That’s why, as the iPhone developed this microphone, they turned to compression to help with this problem.

In this proximity, the iPhone sound is unusable. The microphone in the iPhone can’t handle the SPL.

At a further distance, you get a super compressed sound, usable through phone speakers, but doesn’t always translate what you are truly hearing.

On the other hand, a full microphone setup has a wide range of SPL capabilities. This high threshold allows the microphones not to clip when used on high-decibel noises, like drums.

The better the microphones and the preamps, the higher the decibel threshold.

The reason why I bring all this up is to show the differences between the two. One is better than the other, especially when you compare how one thing sounds to another.

That’s why it’s ok to start out using your phone if you don’t have anything else, but it’s not ok to stay there.

There should always be a desire to improve your setup, even if it’s just two microphones. Give it a try; you never know what you might learn.

What did you guys think? Which setup do you prefer? Do you think an iPhone mic is more transparent than a full mic setup? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Have a fantastic start to your week!! Love you guys! Stay Safe! Okay. Byeeeee.
