Subzero with Lake Superior's Sea Smoke (1/12/2017)

Be sure to watch in HD with audio On! ~~ With ambient temperatures hovering around -10°F (-23°C), I explored a section of Lake Superior's North Shore, anticipating dramatic conditions at daybreak. As usual, our Great Lake did not disappoint! Don't let the first segment fool you -- it looks pretty mild, but hold onto your hats after that!

I hope this video compilation inspires appreciation for our beautiful winter season. Each segment is about 15 seconds long, and is a mere glimpse into the footage captured from a few perspectives as the morning progressed. The footage begins at daybreak -- the rising sun painted the clouds and sea smoke while gentle waves lapped at the icy shoreline. Soon after, the winds kicked up to 25 mph (40 kph) or so, rapidly blowing the sea smoke across the lake and onto shore. These winds created wind chill values around -40°.

I particularly appreciated the way the sunrise painted the graceful sea smoke and clouds over the lake, how the clouds occasionally obscured the sunlight, the varying density of the sea smoke, and the disappearance and reappearance of Lake Superior and its waves. I have included certain perspectives more than once to help illustrate the variable conditions that morning. As the wind-driven sea smoke came onshore, it deposited a very fine "powder" on everything -- my mittens, coat, camera bag, camera, and lens. Realizing that powder was a fine frost that would melt in my warm vehicle, I made a point to thoroughly dust off all the gear to prevent moisture damage.

If you are not familiar with sea smoke, it is a type of winter fog that rises like steam off the surface of the Great Lakes. When the open water is much warmer than the air temperature, sea smoke (or steam fog) rises off the water. In this case, the ambient air temps were -10°F but the temperature of the water was around +34°F (+1°C), so abundant sea smoke had formed. This winter phenomenon is one of my favorites, and I eagerly rise early and "layer up" to witness and record its beauty and grace in the harsh winter conditions.

All video footage was recorded, and plays, at actual speed. We continue to be humbled by Lake Superior, mesmerized by her waves and winter phenomena, and in awe of her raw power.
