Raging Rapids under Swinging Bridge at Jay Cooke State Park (May 14, 2022)

The St. Louis River was roaring as it raced under the swinging bridge at Jay Cooke State Park. The river swelled significantly in recent days due to late spring snowmelt and several waves of thunderstorms.

Interesting stats from the USGS show a significant increase in the gage height and discharge measured at Scanlon following Thursday's storms. From 114 years of records, the data shows that the maximum daily discharge as of 5/15/22 is 22,000 cubic feet per second; during the 2012 flood the peak was 45,300 cubic feet per second on 6/21/2012.
For those concerned about the safety of visitors and the swinging bridge: the video doesn't convey that there was still ample clearance between the water and the walkway of the bridge. The water was much higher than normal, but the bridge and visitors were not in danger.
