Lake Superior Sea Smoke and the St. Clair's Subzero Arrival

Just before daybreak on New Year's Eve, the St. Clair arrived through thick sea smoke, and needed assistance in the icy harbor. It was the coldest morning of the season at –25°F with a brutal wind chill of –50°F or worse. Lake Superior continues to cool and is rapidly making ice while vessels battle many challenges to complete the shipping season. We love watching the movement of sea smoke being swept across the lake and up into the distant clouds. The cloud tops often remind us of breaching porpoises. Toward the end of the video the sun illuminates the clouds as they spring upward from the lake. At a length of 770 feet, the St. Clair has a capacity of 44,000 tons.

This time lapse video was composed of 1153 still images (from a Canon camera that kept on ticking despite the wicked cold!).
