Swan in Sea Smoke in Subzero Weather on Lake Superior

Well I think I scored a BINGO on my birthday photo shoot this year! When assessing the conditions and forecast before heading out, I correctly anticipated there would be a decent sunrise, sea smoke, cool ice formations, and likely some active ice stacking. What was a complete surprise was this beautiful swan, riding an ice floe amidst the sea smoke and white caps on Lake Superior! I have seen eagles, geese, ducks, and ravens hitching a ride on the ice, but never a swan until today.

The swan was quite a distance from shore and looked like a small boulder on the ice, until it extended its neck. This is the first swan I have seen in Duluth in winter. Despite the strong winds, frigid temps, and failure of my dedicated video camera, I managed to capture this short DSLR video of the swan on the ice floe and flying off into the sea smoke. (I didn't have time to connect an external mic, so I removed the audio so you don't have to listen to obnoxious wind noise pummeling the camera.)

I've been fortunate to create some of my favorite winter images and videos on this annual shoot, and am grateful that Mother Nature gifted me with some of my favorite winter features and some new ones! ~Dawn
