Using temp measurements to track flows for water loss management - Stuart Trow and Steve Tooms
The presentation will cover the work undertaken by Invenio Systems Ltd since its formation 6 years ago, to pioneer the use of temperature measurements for flow monitoring in water distribution systems. The first patented system, Stop.Watch, uses bespoke algorithms to assess the flow into individual properties past a customer stop tap or meter; split between use events (intermittent flows) and leaks (continuous flows). This technique has several applications for leak detection and consumption monitoring. The company's Stop.Watch Light process, used to detect leaks that other methods miss, will be described.
Invenio's current development is on a permanently installed system to monitor the temperature of the mains network, and by comparing actual and modelled temperatures, to detect and localise hidden leaks, and new leaks and other events as they occur. An emerging method for monitoring trunk and major distribution mains will also be outlined.
