Update on water loss control activities in the Netherlands - Cor Merks
Water utilities in the Netherlands operate their distribution networks with very low Non-Revenue Water and an as-low-as-reasonably-achievable pressure. Drivers to invest in further NRW reduction are sustainability, water quality and service level. Although the Netherlands are considered “water rich” part of the country has been confronted with groundwater scarcity and abstraction limits during the recent long and dry summers of 2018-20. As a result, NRW reduction is higher on the agenda of the water utilities that rely on groundwater resources. Most water supply zones are an almost complete open system, up to 70% plastic mains and the average zone pressure ranges from 30-35 meters pressure. NRW reduction in these large, open, plastic and low-pressure systems is challenging because the obvious tools “pressure reduction” and “noise logging and acoustic correlation” have limited applicability, and implementation of DMAs is considered too costly. The presentation will focus on some recent and interesting initiatives from large water utilities.
