A crack in a tooth isn't just a structural problem, it's a biological problem. Cracks become a pathway for bacteria to enter teeth and cause tooth decay (i.e. a cavity).

Often these cracks are ignored for too long, and they can lead to toothaches, enamel fractures, or extensive cavities.

If you have lots of large white fillings or amalgam restorations in your mouth, ask your dentist if they see any cracks in your mouth. Sometimes, they are so superficial that they need not be addressed. But if the dentist can get an instrument inside the crack, it's time to get it filled.
