Angelo Dougall, born Senglea Malta in 1928, died 2017. Interviewed by Barry York, Malta, 18 May 1985

I met Angelo Dougall in Valletta, Malta, during my research trip there in May 1985. He had known my father, Loreto. Angelo was a prominent architect and civil engineer. He was educated in Malta and studied further in London in the 1950s. He worked in Ontario, Canada, for 15 years and also in Detroit in the United States. He had migrated to Canada in 1964 and undertook research into the Maltese community there.

He was a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and active in the Maltese Society of Folklore.

He returned to Malta for health reasons on retirement in 1978.

He talks about his involvement in the Maltese communities in Ontario and Detroit and the nature of the Maltese in those communities.

An uncle migrated to Detroit in 1919. Two cousins, Joe and Victor, migrated to Sydney in 1948.

He describes in detail the 'heart-breaking scene' at the Valletta wharves when ships left the harbour carrying hundreds of migrants to Australia and Canada.

He talks about the 'consensus' in favour of emigration in Malta after the War.

He refers to some research findings relating to Maltese migration from the C17th and C18th. Also offers an anecdote about the early C20th experiment in Maltese emigration to Brazil.

Reminisces about Edward Ellul (1894-1983), former Malta Commissioner General in London, who was a very close friend with anti-clericalist views.
