Norm Gallagher b.1931 d.1999 in his own words, childhood and early union years
Norm Gallagher (1931-1999) led the Builders Labourers Federation in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1992, he was interviewed by Stewart Harris (1922-1994) for the National Library of Australia's Oral History collection.
I have compiled this edited excerpt because, of all the commentary since his death on the part of academics and mainstream media and politicians, his own voice has been the missing ingredient in the narrative.
In the excerpt, he talks about his class background and early union years and the influence of Hugh Tierney and Paddy Malone on his political development.
As in any oral history interview, his voice itself - the accent, pauses, pronunciations - speaks volumes. (As does the very different voice of the interviewer).
