CHARLIE CAMILLERI interviewed by Barry York at Broken Hill, New South Wales, on 3 November 1984

Charlie Camilleri was born at Hamrun, Malta, in 1907 and migrated to Adelaide in 1922. He worked underground in the mines at Broken Hill, retiring in 1970.
His wife Jean, whom he married in 1938, was a Broken Hill woman and she is also heard in the interview.
The interview provides insights into community life in Broken Hill in the 1920s and 1930s, including the Maltese clubs and businesses, boarding houses, gambling, working life and unemployed protests during the Depression.
Mr Camilleri's father, Michael, and uncle Johnny, were on the French mailboat, 'Gange', in 1916 when it was turned away from Australia by the Hughes' government and sent on to New Caledonia.
Mr Camilleri never returned to Malta.
You can hear background noise of birds chirping. Like many Maltese men of his generation, Mr Camilleri kept birds in an aviary.
