The Auld Triangle popularised in Brendan Behan's The Quare Fellow 1954 recited by Barry York 2022

'The Auld Triangle' is a song written by Dick Shannon and popularised by Brendan Behan in his classic prison play, 'The Quare Fellow' (1954).
The song, which works well when recited as a poem, captures a lot about prison life and frustration.
'Quare' is Hyberno-English pronunciation for 'queer'. When the play was written, 'queer' meant strange or unusual or remarkable rather than homosexual. There is a gay character in the play but he is referred to as 'The Other Fellow'.
Behan's play is based on his own prison experiences and highlights the barbarity of the death penalty. Behan also critiques the false piety in attitudes to sex, politics and religion at that time.
