There are a ton of people who hate going into the ocean, and rightfully so. If you ask them, a lot of them will tell you that they're afraid of...sharks! Yup. But, when you look at the numbers, selfies kill more than sharks. Yeah, really! There are also other animals that can defeat sharks in a battle, and in today's video, I'll be showing you ten of them. Some of them will probably never face a shark, but a comparison never hurt anyone.
Number 10. The box jellyfish
What's scary about a box? Nothing. But it's a whole different ball game when it's a jellyfish shaped like a box because then we'd have the box jellyfish. They may look innocent enough, but the little guy happens to be one of the ocean's deadliest animals. The most dangerous members of this class of jellyfish are usually confined to the Indo-Pacific Ocean, but other less dangerous members can be found throughout the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Stings from these little Cnidarians are extremely painful to humans and can be fatal if left untreated. Even less venomous species can still be potentially fatal to children.
They are 8 inches (or 20 cm) in size. Their tentacles are packed with harpoon-shaped microscopic injectors specifically adapted to inject venom into their prey on contact. "Box Jellyfish" venom causes their prey's cells to become porous, causing Potassium leakage that eventually causes hyperkalemia. This can lead to heart failure, and death can ensue as quickly as 2 to 5 minutes after exposure. The scariest part is that the box jellyfish can cause harm to any species in the water, even the vicious sharks. The poison may not kill the shark but will be enough to leave the beast in severe pain for a few days
Number 9. Blue whale
Sharks can fight off most of the creatures in this list, but there is one beast any shark won't mess with within a million years. Yes, it's the blue whale. Did you know that the Blue whale is literally the largest sea animal to ever exist? Yes. Bigger than even the Megalodon and the dinosaurs. There has never been a sea monster larger than the Blue Whale, and that's just a fact. Imagine if you were a diver and suddenly came into contact with a large shark bigger than a three-story building. Wouldn't you be scared straight out of your mind? That's exactly the kind of animal the Blue Whale is. It can grow up to an immense and frankly outrageous length of 98 feet and weighs about 190 tons. This creature has survived every era on earth, so It's insane to even think a shark could ever take on a blue whale.
Number 8. Killer whale
Both the great white shark and the killer whale or orca are fearsome top predators in the ocean. But according to a study, the killer whale may be the more formidable one! In 2009, a group of researchers noticed something odd: 17 of their tagged white sharks had been regularly feeding on elephant seals. But when orcas from two different pods arrived in the same areas as the great while, not staying for too long, all 17 sharks disappeared within the next eight hours. Most of them didn't return until the next season, several months later. That shows us how fearsome the killer whale actually is.
The diet of orcas often includes Cow sharks. Cow shark carcasses without livers have also washed ashore near Cape Town, South Africa, and again, this followed nearby orca sightings. Orca is 3 times the size of a great while and weighs nearly 9000 pounds. Sharks know not to mess with this ocean beast at any cost!
Number 7. Sea Lamprey
Up next, I have the predator that is the Sea lampreys. This is an Agnathans, or fish who lack a jaw. Although they are classified in the subphylum Vertebrata, they actually lack a vertebrae, and their entire skeleton is made out of cartilage- similar to a shark. Commonly known for their smooth, cylindrical bodies, they are often confused with eels.
But just because this animal lacks a jaw doesn't mean it's a meek little thing. Sea lampreys are the largest and most aggressive species of lamprey and can get up to 3 ft (1 m) in length as adults, weighing up to 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg). Sea lamp rays are extreme predators as they attach themselves to other fish and start drilling a hole in it with their weirdly shaped mouths. The lamprey has been responsible for the extinction of different species. Sea lampreys often attach themselves to a shark and start drilling inside. That results in a hole and stoppage of the fish's blood clotting. These are extremely dangerous animals, and a group of them can take down even the great white shark!
