Even for billionaires, some purchases are just too much. The world’s elite buy ridiculously
expensive things to fuel their passions, showcase their wealth or spend the money just because
they can. Whether it’s a preserved shark or an $800 million museum built in the memory of a
lover, the rich don’t leave anything behind. Today, we are looking at 10 of the craziest purchases
by billionaires. Number 1 will shock you, so watch out for that!
Number 10. A Superyacht
It’s no secret that yachts are key weapons when it comes to showing off your wealth in the world
of elites. Unlike private jets, Yachts are more expensive to buy and maintain, so not main people
buy one, not even billionaires. But IF there is a boat competition, Russian billionaire oligarch
Roman Abramovich wins, hands down. With an estimated net worth of $19 billion, his toys
include a Boeing 767, an iceboat, and the legendary Chelsea Football Club. The grandest
possession of them all, however, is his claim to the world’s largest and most expensive yacht, the
Eclipse. Launched in 2010, the Eclipse boasts 6,000 square feet of living space across 11
staterooms and suites. The yacht costed Roman around $1.5 billion, even though its actual cost is
no more than $500 million. It cost that much because he got it secretly made, for whatever
reasons. Russians, aren’t they just amazing! We have to say, the yacht is just amazing. If you
miss her when she leaves port, don’t worry: You can park your chopper on her three-helicopter
landing pad. Need to abandon ship quickly? Don’t sweat it. The boat’s three-person submarine
can dive to 160 feet. This makes us wanna rob a bank. What about you!?
Number 9. Biggest word

Hamad bin Hamdan al Nahyan, a billionaire Sheikh and member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family,
has had his name carved into the sandy surface of al Futaisi Island, an island he owns in the
Persian Gulf. At half a mile tall and 2 miles long altogether, the letters HAMAD may be the
world's largest. The craziest part is they're visible from space. Normally, words are written in
sand wash away, but these letters are large enough to form waterways that absorb the
encroaching tide. Indeed, at the time these satellite photographs were taken, said tide can be seen
flowing through the letters all the way to the M. Is there anything rich people cannot do?

Number 8. The Millennium clock
The next person, we have on this list is the richest man in the world: Jeff Bezos. Jeff is many
things, but a show-off isn’t one of them. But there is one this he has invested heavily in: A clock.
Yes, you heard that right. But it’s not the ordinary clock. Bezos has invested $42 million in an
enormous "10,000-year clock" being built by the Long Now Foundation. The clock, which will
tick just once a year, is under construction inside a mountain Bezos owns in the Sierra Diablo
region of Texas. The final device will be 500 feet tall. Special rooms in the clock chambers will
open at specific intervals, and a unique chime will ring each millennium. This is said to be
Bezos’ favorite project. The builders want visitors to consider how we can make sure humanity
survives to hear the clock ring for the last time.
Number 7. 14-Foot Preserved Shark
Plenty of rich people have impressive fish tanks, but that’s child’s play compared to laying claim
to your own pickled shark. Don’t know what we are talking about? Well, in 2004, billionaire
hedge fund manager Steve Cohen bought what just might be the world’s most unique piece of

contemporary art: a 14-foot tiger shark preserved with a combination of alcohol and
formaldehyde. If you are not a fan of manuscripts, this might be more interesting to you than
what Bill gates bought! Originally purchased for $93,000 in 1992 by art mogul Charles Saatchi,
Cohen bought the piece, officially called “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of
Someone Living”, more than a decade later for an undisclosed amount. But you know humans,
nothing can stay disclosed for too long! Soon New York magazine reported it to be between $8
million and $12 million. We have to say, this is definitely worth the price!
