14th Century Medieval Makeup and Hairstyle - Codex Manesse Historical Cosplay Look

I started putting this Codex Manesse style costume together almost 20 years ago. With my recent purchase of the barbette and fillet set, I finished it at last!

In celebration of the achievement, I also decided to create a makeup look and make a video!

Although I have not seen this exact "recipe" for medieval rouge cosmetic, all the ingredients were available at the time and are the kind of thing known to be used. Rouge recipes didn't change a whole lot between medieval and 18th century -- only when ingredients like vermillion came to really be understood as poisonous did people begin to alter the recipes to be more healthy. Making the rouge from iron oxide or carmine would also be acceptable. There's even evidence that red-dyed fabric was ground up to make pigment.
