Not many written recipes for ancient cosmetics survive, and those that do often use dangerous or difficult to find ingredients. This recipe was derived from a surviving container of ancient Roman makeup, which scientists analyzed for its ingredients and reconstructed.

Tin is an unusual ingredient to find in modern makeup, but it has a white color and is safer than lead. It is still used in some modern cosmetics, though not considered safe in this high of a concentration (so maybe I will die from this?) It is abrasive -- it's the same stuff that makes up my old-fashioned nail buffing compound in my 1920s manicure video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnEVXOi0wPQ

The result is very much like a modern mineral sunscreen. If you want to fake this out with more skin-friendly ingredients, a 50 SPF or higher zinc sunscreen will look very similar, especially if it is in an oily base as are most baby sunscreens.
