Trying out historical beauty products really makes one appreciate how far makeup has come!
This is video I’ve wanted to make for a long time, featuring mascara of the past!
While these were all definitely used into the 1920s, it’s also correct makeup for the 1910s and, for actresses, probably into the 1880s or so.
For the “mascaro” I used a Chinese ink stick. No idea how safe that was to put on my eye — but neither did folks at the time, since there were few if any laws regulating these formulas, and it was left up to the manufacturers to choose “healthful” ingredients. It wasn’t till a lawsuit in the 1930s, filed by a woman who went blind from using mascara, that laws were made forbidding unsafe ingredients.
The Vaseline and pigment was made with Vaseline and BareMinerals onyx powder.
The “Beading cosmetic” was made from a Halloween type greasepaint stick (no brand printed on label) and a bit of the Vaseline mixture. The term “beading” came about because there was supposed to be a way of applying this cosmetic that resulted in an apparent black bead at the end of each eyelash section — but my formula was getting cold too fast to achieve something like that. I suspect a mixture that’s heavy on something like beeswax, which liquifies at a lower temperature than, say, paraffin, would better suit that kind of application.
