2021-01-24 Xiao Qi Ji ~ The Tippy-top, the Trot, & Tian Tian

Day 156 #PandaStory: It's been a relatively quiet 24 hours for Xiao Qi Ji and Mei Xiang, except for their early morning routine including lots of climbing and trotting. But daddy Tian Tian has been busy!

First scene shows Xiao Qi Ji getting to the very top of the rockwork in room 3 for the first time. (Interesting that he's spent more time on the rockwork in room 2 than room 3). You'll see Mei Xiang getting a drink at the beginning of one segment, so it's possible he stopped to play in the water. Mei Xiang kept bleating while he was up there, and she'd finally had enough and carried him down.

The next series shows Xiao Qi Ji playing follow-the-leader with Mei Xiang this morning. His cubbie trot is much improved as he plows through the bamboo, hot on her heels! And such a jaunty, bouncy step he has!

Most of the video is devoted to daddy Tian Tian early this morning in his outdoor yard. As Laurie said in the January 15th update: "Even though Mei Xiang will not go into estrus this year since she is caring for a cub, Xiao Qi Ji’s father, Tian Tian, is in the middle of rut (male breeding season). He has been very active lately climbing trees, marking his territory and splashing around in pools and hose water while we’re cleaning his enclosure." You'll also see our very dirty daddy bear scent anointing, and pawing at the tree bark. Then the camera switched to the den ... and Xiao Qi Ji was sleeping very soundly after his busy morning.
