2020-12-27 Mei Xiang & Xiao Qi Ji ~Wild, Wacky, Whoopee!

Whoopee defined: expressing wild excitement or joy; wild revelry.

6am yesterday morning Mei Xiang carries her cub Xiao Qi Ji into the den from room 2, and commences to nest build and eat bamboo. Xiao Qi Ji has a choice of where he wants to be now that he is mobile, and he chooses to watch and emulate his mother's behavior, as well as stay close by. As Mei Xiang brings more bamboo stalks into the den, Qi Ji winds down to sleep the morning away in the den while his mother goes off to enjoy her breakfast.

I must admit the first time I saw a Giant Panda mother do this behavior with a smallish cub in the den, I was a bit freaked out as I had no clue what she was doing! But now I know it is normal behavior that they do not start exhibiting until the cub is large enough to handle the flying bamboo.
