2020-10-08 An Inside View: Keepers & the Den Door

There is a lot going on in this video.

First off, cubbie is NOT being hurt by Mei Xiang when she carries him back and forth in the den. This is normal behavior for her, she's carried all her cubs like this at one time or another. Remember, she's a momma Giant Panda and she knows how to rear a Giant Panda cub!

Second: You get to hear (but not see!) the keepers come into the protected area of the den behind the bars. And the lights go on! What is so sweet is they address Mei Xiang by name, and give her advance warning that they are going to close (as well as open) the den door (you'll see it move to the lower right part of the screen). But did our little boy notice the lights or hear the door? According to the latest exam, his eyes are wide open, and his ear canals should be fully open soon! As Mei Xiang disappears to the other end of den to get a treat from her keepers, cubbie vocalizes. The den door opens back up, the lights go off, Mei returns to cubbie, then she leaves, but he keeps fussing, so she quickly returns to him :)
