The concept of constructing a mosque in Taksim Square is not new, as it has been around since 1952. However, it withstood many hurdles - legal and political - because of what this area represented in relation to republicanism and secularism. Although courts and different governments said no, the project was always close to Erdoğan's heart since his days as Istanbul mayor. Its construction started in December 2017 after approval from the Cultural Monuments Preservation Board earlier that year, with Sur Yapı as the contractor. The controversy surrounding the mosque's construction reached its zenith during the Gezi Park protests that erupted in 2013.
