Eminönü is a historic district of Istanbul, lying to the west of the Golden Horn. The district was independent until it was merged with Fatih in 2008. Eminönü commercially, like most of this area during Ottoman times, is one of the districts greatly devoted to trade and commerce. Sirkeci waterfront in the present-day Eminönü has always been one of the major port areas of this city right from the start. It is indeed a crowded part of modern Istanbul, even if it continues to shrink wherein the last few decades. It has its popular places, including the Istanbul University of Commerce and the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. It covers an area of 5 km2 consisting of 33 neighborhoods.
