പാലായിലെ വെള്ളിയെപ്പളി എന്ന കൊച്ചു ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ ജനിച്ച ലിസ് മാത്യു 23 വർഷമായി കേന്ദ്ര രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തെപ്പറ്റി എഴുതുന്ന ഒരുജേണലിസ്റ്റ് ആണ്. മലയാള ദിനപ്പത്രമായ ദീപികയിൽ വെറും റിപ്പോർട്ടറായി ജോലി തുടങ്ങിയ ലിസ് പിന്നീട് ഇന്ത്യ അബ്രോഡ്, ദി മിന്റ് എന്നീ മാധ്യമങ്ങളിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പത്രപ്രവർത്തകയായി. ഒരു സമ്പൂർണ മലയാള പത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പത്രത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ലിസിന്റെ യാത്ര അത്ര സുഖകരമായിരുന്നില്ല. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ശരിയായി എഴുതാനും സംസാരിക്കാനും കഴിയാഞ്ഞതിനെ തുടർന്ന് ഒരുപാട് പരിഹാസങ്ങളും പുച്ഛങ്ങളും ഒരുപാട് പേരിൽ നിന്നും ലിസിന് നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. പരിഹാസങ്ങളിൽ പതറാതെ പിന്നീടുള്ള വർഷങ്ങളിൽ ദൃഢനിശ്ചയത്തോടെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി പരിശ്രമിച്ചു. തൻ്റെ പോരായ്മകൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കി ലിസ് അതിനനുസരിച്ച് കഠിനാധ്വാനം ചെയ്ത് ഒടുവിൽ നന്നായി ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് എഴുതാനും സംസാരിക്കാനും ഉള്ള തൻ്റെ സ്വപ്നം നേടിയെടുത്തു.
