How To Chop An Onion Like A Chef | Giada De Laurentiis

Chopping onions can lead to tears, unless you use this simple technique.
They're essential to so many of the things we cook, but there's no more frustrating ingredient to prep than the simple onion. That shape, the sting, the smelly hands you're left with afterward — it's no wonder we end up in tears! Thankfully, these simple tips can make all the difference for your kitchen confidence.

This is the first in my new series of videos on knife skills, where I'll show you how to handle some of cooking's trickiest ingredients. Before we start, some safety pointers: First, always make sure your knife is sharp. A dull blade is the most common cause of injury when it comes to knives — you have to work harder to slice, and the knife is more likely to slip around on the cutting board. Then, hold the knife with your thumb and forefinger on the blade just above the handle, so you have more control over where the knife goes. Most importantly, protect those fingers! Hold your onion with your fingertips curled back from the blade's path so you're slicing parallel to your knuckles. Now you're ready to get chopping.
