Lumber Liquidators Flooring Under Federal Investig
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A federal investigation into a hardwood flooring company has at least one mountain resident concerned if the flooring in her home has the potential to make her sick.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission began investigating Lumber Liquidators after a 60 Minutes story aired earlier this month.
The report showed tests of Chinese-made laminate sold by the company exceeded California standards for safe formaldehyde levels.
Terri Thompson saw the report and brought a home kit to test the air in her home.
She found the formaldehyde limits in her home were three and a half times higher than the recommended exposure limit.
"I'm concerned about the long-term cumulative effect of breathing in a carcinogenic in a level that this lab is saying is unsafe," Thompson said.
She's also worried about the effects it could have on her dog that has an unexplained growth near her mouth.
"It's just a series of hard nodules on her face," Thompson said.
She can't say whether the flooring is directly to blame for that or some of the health issues she's been experiencing herself, but she does have one request of the company.
"If they chose to import wood that doesn't meet the standards that they're supposed to, I think they need to own up and help people replace the wood, so they don't get sick," she said.
Lumber Liquidators says its flooring is safe and vows to cooperate with the probe.
As for Thompson's case, she says the company told her to use one of its kits to test her home.
