Game Changer: Alex Destino

One of the best high school baseball players in the nation competes here in the mountains. His name: Alex Destino. As Luke Notestine found out, Destino returned home from a life-changing experience with much more than just a gold medal. Alex Destino is one of the best high school baseball players in the country. He was one of 20 players in the nation selected to represent Team USA in the 18U World Championships.Alex Destino says, The first time we saw our jerseys, we had a special ceremony at the ESPN Zone in Disneyland. Seeing my name on the back and USA on the front, I can't put into words what that was like.Destino was a very important part of Team USA's success against the best competition in the world. He helped lead the Americans to a gold medal in Taiwan against Japan. Alex says, It humbled me. Being overseas was not my forte, being watched by a lot of people. But trying new things made me a better person.Luke Notestine says, I'm here with North Buncombe Senior, Alex Destino who just got back from Taiwan. He won this gorgeous gold medal for beating Japan in the World Championship. Little does he know that I'm going home with this today. 'Hey, what are you doing? Come back here with that!'Alex says, After the Championship Game, they lined us up on the blocks in front of everybody, put the medals around our neck and sang the National Anthem. That was the most goosebumps I've ever had.Matt Landreth is the new Baseball Coach at North Buncombe. He can't wait to get started coaching his new team, especially with Destino as one of the team leaders.Matt Landreth says, I know what he can do. I've seen it all on paper. The athlete that he is. Goodness gracious, I'm ready for February 26th when we open up with Mountain Heritage.Destino has committed to play College Baseball at South Carolina. His outstanding performance in the World Championships will help his chances of possibly getting drafted by a Major League team someday.
