Less-known: Australian White Cypress Pine

The Callitris is a species of evergreen Australian native cypress pine tree.

There are twelve other Australian native pine tree apart from this particular white cypress, including the Queensland kauri, Bunya pine, Hoop pine and Norfolk Island pine.

In particular, the White Cypress thrives in sandy soils and are suited to the Australian climate with small needle-like leaves that are cold tolerant and reduce water loss over summer.

I find these trees to be so gentle and although they only grow up to 12 metres, they dominate the landscape with their soft appearance, small delicate blue-green leaves and tiny conifer cones.

Many Australian conifers are now limited in distribution, significant decline occurring after European settlement due to logging and fires.

We came across these trees in the Alpine National Park.

They are wind-pollinated, which is fascinating. We watched as the wind blew, the trees shook, and the pollen floated across the mountains pollinating trees kilometres away.
