Green Energy Tips for Renters
With so much discussion about energy and power prices in Australia, the reality is that reducing our carbon footprint makes economic sense at home, as going 'green' will save you money.
In the case of renters, the investment is lower, and the returns much quicker. Mark Delaney explains to us his main strategies to reduce his family's carbon footprint while also reducing his power bill.
It goes like this:
* Choose 'renewable energy' from your power company or switch companies if they don't have the option.
* Powershop and Diamont Energy are two providers that source 100% of their energy from renewable sources.
* Disconnect from gas.
* Gas is a fossil fuel. Use electric appliances like an induction cookstove or an electric oven and save the monthly connection fee from the gas provider.
* Adjust your aircon and heating use—the single most significant expense in your household. Using a fan in summer and an extra blanket in winter will go a long way in reducing your carbon footprint and your bill.
* Stopping drafts around your doors and windows is a cheap fix that will go a long way to improve the insulation of your rental.
* Invest in a solar co-op. This is an excellent option if you want to be part of the solar revolution but don't own your house. Check online for local co-ops that invest in solar or wind farms.
And remember, it all starts with the first step—no need to accomplish everything at once.
Mark's book 'Low-carbon living and loving it', co-authored with his son Tom, is the proof that we can live a happy and satisfied low-carbon life. We have partnered with Mark to produce a series of videos that provide simple skills and tips to start reducing our carbon footprint.
