How to Improve Your Health and Save the Planet

If we had to pinpoint the single most important action we can take to reduce our carbon footprint while improving our health, this would be to walk and ride our bikes instead of driving as much as we can.

For city dwellers, the solution is as simple as:

Walk for trips up to 1 km.
Ride for trips up to 10km
Train it from 10km onwards

According to Mark Delaney’s book, our travel represents about 20% of our carbon budget, at more than 5 tonnes per person per year if we include buying a new car every 15 years. By his estimates, we should be able to live with a ‘budget’ of 2 tonnes a year for all our emissions. This is approximately what the average Indian spends annually. Australia sits at about 23 tonnes per person, the highest average on the planet.
