Cascade Lake-X 10980XE CPU Lapping to Gain More Performance for Free

CPU lapping was a common topic long time ago. You could even out the possible unevenness of a CPU IHS to improve the thermal performance and therefore your possible overclocks. Now with Cascade Lake-X and Skylake-X refresh CPUs that topic is relevant once again, as we can't delid these CPUs anymore and we have to stick with the original Intel IHS.

On this video I show you how I lap the 10980XE, get it first to bare copper using a more rough 240 grit sand paper, and then finish it with finer 2000 grit sand paper while working my way up with different grits. The end result isn't really dramatic, average of the core maximums is maybe 1-2 degrees better, but the temperatures are a lot more even now, so the difference between the coolest and hottest core is much smaller now.
