Hello, neighbors, it's Brad here from Etrailer and today we are taking a look at installing the TowSmart trailer hitch receiver on a 2022 Toyota Sienna. And adding a hitch to your minivan really opens it up whether you're on vacation or needing to do some work. You don't have to get things inside of your vehicle. You can take your bikes to the trail or have a cargo carrier loaded up so you have plenty of space for the occupants inside. Now this is gonna be a great option, so let's take a closer look at it. And this one is a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, which I always recommend if you can get, because there's tons of options when it comes to bike racks, cargo carriers, or even a ball mount.
And all of those accessories are gonna stay in place with a 5/8ths pin and clip. Now this is not included with the hitch, but many times when you pick up accessories, they'll have them included. And if you plan on leaving an accessory on, maybe a bike rack for the season or a cargo carrier while traveling out of town, you might wanna look at a locking pin and clip. It's a really good deterrent for someone walking by that can't just take out your pin and clip and take that accessory with them. We have a plate style safety chain loop, so if you do plan on pulling a trailer, hooking up those safety chains will not be hard with a standard S hook.
Even a larger clevis style should go on there with no issues. Whether you're towing a trailer or putting accessories on the back, you do wanna adhere to the weight capacities, not only of the hitch, but also what the vehicle's rated to do. So check the vehicle's owner's manual and see what it's rated for for towing and then compare that with the hitch and take the lower number. That way you're not overloading and you stay safe out on the road. Some accessories that you'll pick up like bike racks and cargo carriers have the ability to stow in a vertical fashion, which is really nice.
It shortens the length of the vehicle when they're not in use, but you do wanna make sure that they're gonna be able to work with this van. And I really don't worry too much because from the center of our hitch pin hole to the furthest point of our fascia, it's about three and a half inches. So really don't have any concerns that it's not gonna be able to clear. But keep in mind when they're stowed, more than likely your license plate will be blocked as well as your rear view camera, but you could always fold those down as necessary and you'll probably need to do that as well if you plan on opening up the hatch with those stowed. Another important measurement is gonna be ground clearance.
So from the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground, we're coming in right at 12 inches. And not ground clearance that this would bottom out, but it's mostly important for choosing a ball mount. If you have your trailer available, you can get that trailer on level ground, measure from the ground to the top of the coupler and then compare that with our measurement to determine the rise or drop necessary. In this case, I would almost guarantee that you're gonna be looking at a rise position, maybe by a couple inches, and if you're not sure what kind of trailer you'll be towing or the height of the trailer that you have, you could always get an adjustable ball mount and cover a whole spread with that. But the main thing is is getting everything nice and level while towing. Now depending on the trim of your van, you may or may not have the hands-free lift gate. So if you do have it, you may be wondering, is this still gonna work with a hitch in the way And the answer is yes. So this is not my vehicle, got it first time, but as you can see, I have the FOB in my hand here and everything works just as normal. So it's great that you still get the usability of the hitch and it doesn't hinder any of the factory options. And more than likely, you're probably on this video to see how it installs and I'm probably gonna make your day by saying this is a really easy one to do, even in your driveway or garage. Really all that you're gonna need is a trim panel tool, a 10 millimeter socket, something to cut some plastic, a torque wrench, and a 19 millimeter socket. But beyond that, it's pretty straightforward. You're gonna remove an underbody panel, do some trimming to ma
