Make $15 Beach Shade tent Easy Quick DIY
How to make a $15 beach tarp tent.
I plan to do some surf fishing this winter and need protection from the sun and rain. Instead of using an umbrella or buying a shelter I decided to make a beach tent. I saw some for sale online exactly like I wanted that were $150 to $200. I made this one for $15 and it works better than I even imagined it would.
The tent was extremely quick and easy to build and takes up little space when rolled and stored away.
Parts
Tarp 7'4" x 9'6" at Harbor freight
(2) sch 40 1 inch pvc ten feet long
(2) machine screws
(2) end caps
(3) one inch pvc connectors
2 grommets
50 feet 3/16 polypropylene rope
scrap wood for stakes and rope buckles.
I did not need rope buckles, but they are simple to build and make me look like I know what I am doing.
I used a cheap heat gun to melt the ends of the horizontal pvc pipes and clamped them flat. This is not mandatory. You could just drill two holes through the pipe and not flatten it, but since I have a heat gun it was quick and simple to flatten. The heating took only a couple of minutes for each pipe end. If you do not have a heat gun to melt the pvc, I made a video a few years ago showing how to make a gadget you can melt or soften pvc with here. https://youtu.be/W06kgzVH2xE
Don't forget to melt pvc outside and do not breathe the fumes.
I used an electric drill and a Rockwell Bladerunner for cutting most parts but a simple jig saw or even hand saw will also work.
I used a grommet tool to install two center grommets missing from the tarp.
The size of the tarp is important. The size I chose is perfect and the only alterations I had to make was to add 2 grommets to the center edges.
The 2 vertical poles are 6 feet long each, and then cut in half.
The horizontal pole was initially 8 feet long using the two 4 foot pieces left from cutting the two 6 foot pieces. After making the holes in the ends of the horizontal poles I removed 2 and 1/4 inch from both pieces so they would match the width of the tarp and line up with the center tarp grommets and the screws on the capped ends of the vertical poles.
The bottom of the vertical poles are sharpened and I used a rubber mallet for inserting the stakes deep in the sand.
The shade provided by the tent is much better than any umbrella and the tent can be readjusted in a few moments to compensate for the changing angles of the sun.
I will be painting the exterior side of the tent a bright white to reduce heat. I will also add some rubber tubing to the tie down grommets as an attachment for the ropes to reduce strain on the grommets in high winds.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
