California Condor Trio Takes Flight at Pinnacles
California condors (Gymnogyps californianus) perched atop a High Peaks pinnacle at Pinnacles National Park take flight and soar off together. Pinnacles condor 692 (purple wing tag with 92 on it - male) launches first and flies right over me prompting partners Pinnacles condor 463 (white wing tag with 63 on it - male) and Ventana Wildlife Society condor 726 (green tag with white 26 - female) to follow. These three are largely inseparable though on this day they definitely spent some time apart. However, by evening they were glued together for preening and courtship and aerial acrobatics. In this clip, however, they mostly soared with wings practically motionless as most folks expect the birds to do. When they fly anywhere near you, the whoosh of their soar is pronounced and powerful. It's like a small plane flying by.
