Hopkin's Rose (Okenia rosacea)

Sometimes I think the most insignificant things in this world are the most impressive, like these incredible sea slugs known as Hopkin's Roses. Never bigger than the end of your thumb, they captivate me more upon viewing my footage (where I can appreciate their vibrant color and form in the sort of detail my eyes just can't catch) than when I'm actually staring down into a tidepool. And replacing the crunchy roaring audio of surf and splash and squeak and clunk with measured but plaintive piano tones ala this background track of "Oiseaux tristes" composed by Maurice Ravel, performed by Luis Sarro, and annexed from Musopen.org where it is described as being free from copyright restrictions as one more brick in the massive construction of public domain. Probably the most intriguing thing to ponder is that these monumental and yet diminutive beasts only began to appear in range of my camera within the last three years. I believe they first arrived in significant numbers in 2015 and since then they've been brightening the tidepools of Linda Mar, Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and Pillar Point (though the frequency with which they appear is significantly diminished from the pink wave crashing over Bay Area tidepools in 2015). Climate change? La Nina? Who can tell and frankly who wants to argue with all the trolls and bots and foreign entities. I'll just stare into the pink and dissolve into the melody.
