Opalescent Nudibranch (Hermissenda crassicornis) at Linda Mar

This opalescent nudibranch (Hermissenda crassicornis) was stranded, temporarily, in a bundle of seaweed at low tide. Generally these brilliantly hued and glowing creatures are seldom even an inch in length. This one was probably close to an inch and a half, which is huge for this variety of bedazzled sea-slug. I transferred it to a deeper pool where others of its kind were also gathered (though none of them even close to this one in size) and observed as it scaled from one sepia seaweed blade to another. In addition to their brilliant colors, opalescent nudibranchs actually seem to absorb ambient light. When filmed they glow like a thousand watt bulb, though in reality it is as if there's just a tiny candle within them. I was unable to use video filters to effect the sort of "realism" which would be more representative of an actual encounter, but in the end the brilliant glow is fascinating even when exaggerated by the camera's lens.
