Dover - The Lock and the Key to England

The town of Dover, England has been called "the Lock and the Key to England." It is the nearest point in Great Britain to Europe. France is only twenty-one miles across the English Channel and can actually be seen on a clear day. Sixteen-million travelers pass through Dover each year. It's one of the busiest shipping terminals in the world. It's also a popular place with those wanting to swim to Europe. Since the first recorded crossing by a swimmer in 1875, over two-thousand two-hundred swimmers have made it. The White Horse Pub, built in 1365, is the official pub of the Channel Swimmers Association. Dover played a key roll in the Second World War. In the early days of the war, the plan to rescue British and French soldiers trapped on the beach in Dunkirk was developed and executed from here.
