Oasis - Live in Utrecht (10th January 1996) - Partially Corrected
Oasis
Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
Venue: Music Centre
Date: 10th January 1996 (First show of the year)
Source: Broadcast Recording
The first concert of the year, the band continue the Morning Glory Tour in the Netherlands in Utrecht. 1996 would end up being a massive year for Oasis, and massive gigs would happen across the year, including two nights in Maine Road, Loch Lomond, and Knebworth. However, this year would also bring tension to the members as Liam would pull out of the band’s MTV Unplugged performance and not attend the first show of their summer American Tour. So because many famous (and infamous) things happen throughout the later half of the year, these first couple gigs prior to Maine Road get a bit overshadowed in retrospective.
The setlist tonight runs just under an hour (it was apparently cut short due to issues which will soon be explained) and it’s similar to the KEGE Festival in Minnesota the previous year. The show is captured on a wonderful broadcast recording, the only problem with it was that the speed was all over the place (unfortunately I couldn’t fix the entire thing because of exporting issues, so I invite anyone to fix it entirely)
The performance tonight is good from the instrumentalists albeit there is an irremovable mark on the show itself as Liam’s voice is shot at this gig and he leaves the stage during Live Forever. Yes, even having a couple weeks to rest he sounds very strained and his tone dips heavily by Cigarettes & Alcohol (the end especially sounds horrible vocally) which actually makes this show quite hard to enjoy and listen to. Liam contracted laryngitis around this time, and it’s not hard to see why with singing like this. While in Boston the previous November he also backed out, it’s fair to say that was the busy touring and album recording schedule brought on throughout that year. Here is the first glimpse of his vocal deterioration, something which become more notable with each passing year (though you can still expect some amazing gigs for the next few years from him). Despite this the band tries their best to compensate for their rugged vocalist and Champagne Supernova has some interesting work from Alan and Noel. The audience are a great bunch willing to sing to many of the later songs. Overall I don’t recommend this show if you’re here for the vocals, but the audience and the band really help in making it bearable especially by Noel’s acoustic set!
