Oasis - Live in Tokyo (20th February 1998)
Oasis
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Venue: Nippon Budokan
Date: 20th February 1998
Source: Video Feed
The third and final night at the Budokan and along with Chicago, is probably the most famous show of the year. This gig was professionally filmed in full, and exists thanks to several bootleg DVD’s since it’s first airing, and you’ll hear this audio also comes from the video feed. Looking upon it’s fame though, you find that this is easily the weakest of the three nights. This show tends to get a bit of battering from diehard fans, but I can assure you this show isn’t anywhere near as bad as it is. The main critique is pointed towards Liam, who’s voice is starting to take it’s downward turn. After using his voice for all it’s had in the last 5 months, it takes a bit of a beating on this show, especially on Be Here Now and Live Forever (which he lets Noel sing the end of) but it doesn’t sound bad on all the numbers between these two songs. The rest of the band are the usual for 1998 though and Noel plays well at points throughout this show, with Champagne Supernova being a great example. He replaces Talk Tonight with a cover of the Chemical Brother’s song Setting Sun. This song had an interesting history, as Noel had actually co-wrote the song, and a lot of his inspiration for this Chemical Brothers version came from an Oasis demo of a song called Comin’ On Strong (which originally had Liam singing on vocals). This song would be played on the rest of the tour, and the song used the same arrangement and key as Fade In-Out, so an almost seamless transition between the two can make up a small medley. Along with this, It’s Getting Better Man is dropped for this one night, I assume Liam had words with Noel after Live Forever, as it’s obvious that song wasn’t going to be done justice tonight. It is a weaker show overall but I think there are weaker shows on the way, that will point the finger away from this one from being the worst gig of the year. Because this is the T.V broadcast, Noel’s message after Acquiesce has been included.
