Oasis - Live in Philadelphia (3rd December 1999) - Soundboard Source
Oasis
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A
Venue: First Union Center
3rd December 1999
Soundboard Recording
Having finished their recording sessions to their fourth album Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants a few months prior, the boys play a few U.S gigs in the late half of 1999 to re-establish themselves. These were the only gigs played in the year, as most of the time was spent working on the album. This is the first show taking place in Philadelphia. It’s a great performance and it comes straight from the soundboard but seems to have Liam as the main priority in the mix in spots, and also misses all the cheering between songs, but overall it’s a nice listen and if you want the full version with video, check the bottom of the description.
As the 1990’s come to an end, change is in the air. With Britpop and their last album well and truly dead, Oasis took time off in France to record their fourth album. Trouble began to plague the sessions though, and ended up in both Bonehead and Guigsy leaving the group. In The Water Rats Club in London, the Gallaghers were quick to say “the future of Oasis is secure.” However in reality, finding replacements would be a bit harder than that. While they found a rhythm guitarist fairly easily with Colin ‘Gem’ Archer, originally from band Heavy Stereo, finding a bassist took a long period of time (so much so the Go Let It Out video only features the three mainstays, and Gem) but they picked Andy Bell of the band Ride. While he also an excellent main guitarist, he was instructed to play bass by Noel and as such Oasis 2.0 was born. ‘Gem’ would soon become to be very important as he was a far more competent rhythm guitarist than Bonehead in the live setting, and he and Noel would switch around during songs resulting in extra licks in gigs going forward and having a far more competent bass player in Andy meant a more tight band. To add to all of this, Liam and Noel tied the knot with their respective partners, and both also beginning to really have to rationalise their family life and being on the road.
While these things would come to head in due course, for right now Oasis (with a new coat of polish) are back. The performance is a excellent one for the time period. After having all of the year off touring, Liam sounds very fresh, and he enters a short few months of where he has a great snarl in his singing, and it sounds excellent. He sings very well on all the songs, with Cigarettes and Alcohol and Champagne Supernova being awesome renditions for this era and the short sets mean that he doesn’t deteriorate his voice as much as he would in the next coming years. With the new recruitment of Gem, Noel is far more tame on the guitar, but he would still whip out some excellent moments in Japan next year.
Cigarettes And Alcohol - 0:00
Supersonic - 5:33
Wonderwall - 9:57
Champagne Supernova - 14:05
Helter Skelter (Noel on vocals) - 20:26
