After an appearance on Saturday Night Live on the 4th, Oasis play the first of two nights in the Hammerstein Ballroom. I’ll not get into too much due to a lot of Oasis fans already having their own say on the matter, but many consider the Radio City Music Hall to have been a better venue to host the only American Be Here Now Tour shows of 1997. Radio City Music Hall was a more commonly used venue at this point, and of course had the bigger capacity but some have said the move was due to the Hammerstein being newly refurbished so invited big names to help revitalise the image. All in all though, while some have gone as far to say it’s what made Oasis lag behind other bands in terms of popularity in the States, I don’t think that this admittedly pretty minor oversight had that big of an overall effect (the following few North American Tours has much more to answer for in that regard.) it does set up the perfect opportunity for the band to debut Don’t Go Away here after playing a shortened version of the song a few on SNL.

It felt like for ages many considered this song to be one of the best of the Be Here Now album, however recently i’ve seen people starting to split hairs on it. I personally really enjoy it, and the live versions too. Liam does struggle a bit on it tonight, but it is a hard one to sing, and given it’s only the first full performance of the song, you can cut him some slack. The rest of the concert plays out as normal but it still means a great performance. Liam sounds a bit more fresh here, nailing hard songs like Be Here Now, Some Might Say and All Around The World with conviction. The instrumentalists too are in great form with Noel of course still in full swing as per usual with great playing in many of the songs. He teases the Cigarettes & Alcohol riff once again, similar to the first night in Birmingham, this time just before Champagne Supernova. While I could’ve used the soundboard here, the more easily available version of this night is the AUD source, which i’ve used here.
