California quail and wild turkeys at Pinnacles campground

I was able to spend the day at Pinnacles National Park in San Benito County, California before it was closed to day use in the interests of public health. I always try to leave SF as close to the crack of dawn as possible so as to still arrive fairly early in the morning. At this time - usually around 8 am, most of the campers are still inside their tents or their RV's and the local fauna is usually taking advantage. On this morning, there were more California quail (Callipepla californica) - forgive my misspelling of the latin name on the video itself - than I could count and I was treated to the full display of a wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) aiming to impress. I never realized that wild turkeys make sound when they strut...sound that isn't a call...by ruffling feathers and spitting. I had the turkeys and the quail all to myself, which was the perfect beginning of an awe-filled day of communing with the landscape and all the critters of Pinnacles.
