Wild elephant moms and their tiny babies relax, spray, wallow and play in mud. Natures' pure bliss

*Information English / Русский / Français*
In spite of its thickness (2-4 cm), the elephant's skin is sensitive and fragile, more particularly in young elephants. Elephants take care of their skin by spraying themselves with dust which protects them from the sun and by taking mud baths in order to dislodge parasites. They are particularly fond of mud bathing. By spraying, they coat their bodies with a thick layer of wet mud and sometimes lie down in the mud to relax. The calves take advantage of these moments to play in wallowing in the mud.
Mud has several virtues: it allows them to:
- to improve their protection against insects because when the mud dries, it creates a shell that crushes the parasites that live on their skin. It falls off the elephants skin taking the undesirable hosts with it as ticks.
- to protect themselves from the sun.
- to cool them when the water in the mud evaporates.
The elephant’s practice of mud bathing is a herd activity that facilitates group cohesion. This mud bathing is also believed to be instinctive rather than a learned activity as we see baby elephants enjoying a mud bath from a very early age. In this clip, two same sized calves discover the benefits of such baths with their moms. Are they twins, very rare in elephants (+/- 1% as inhumans)? It appears they respond together to the same mother's cue to walk again.
