During his mirror training, an alpha male chimpanzee may have to prove his status to the group

IN ANIMALS AS IN HUMANS, SELF-RECOGNITION IN A MIRROR IS NOT INNATE.
It is the result of the more comfortable training in the mirror at home among young humans in the company of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way.
Among chimpanzees, in the insecurity of the jungle, learning with his parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals.
Several years ago, during their first exposures to mirrors, each alpha chimpanzee actually recognized his neighbors among the reflections, he also noticed the presence of a stranger he had never met: his image that he did not know. In an attempt to frighten this stranger, this chimpanzee showed his large build, in standing in a bipedal position, stretching out his arms, ruffling his hair, screaming stridently and slapping the mirror.
In a quiet environment, often alone, each one of them is learning the mirror by quietly observing his image and begins to understand that it is himself in the mirror. But when he notices that members of the group are watching him and start to shout, he has to prove his status as a dominant male by hitting his image, which has become an intruder again!
Another alpha male can then try to calm his anger by engaging in pseudo-copulation and soothing grooming.

Chez les animaux comme chez les humains, la reconnaissance de soi dans un miroir n'est pas innées. C'est le résultat d'un apprentissage plus confortable devant le miroir à la maison chez les jeunes humains en compagnie de leurs parents qui ont suivi cette formation et qui ont les mots pour expliquer à leur jeune enfant les propriétés du miroir. Un humain adulte, face à un miroir pour la première fois de sa vie, tout en ignorant ses propriétés et même son existence, se comporterait aussi de façon irrationnelle. C'est seulement le manque de connaissance du miroir qui le fait réagir de cette façon.
Chez les chimpanzés, dans l'insécurité de la jungle, apprendre avec ses parents qui ne l'ont pas fait et qui ne parlent pas, c'est beaucoup plus difficile même pour des individus intelligents.
Il y a plusieurs années, lors de leurs premières expositions aux miroirs, chaque chimpanzé alpha reconnaissait effectivement ses voisins parmi les reflets, il remarquait aussi la présence d'un étranger qu'il n'a jamais rencontré : son image qu'il ne connaissait pas. Pour tenter d'effrayer cet étranger, ce chimpanzé montre sa grande corpulence en se mettant debout en position bipède, les bras tendus, les poils hérissés (plus de volume), poussant des cris stridents et assénant des claques sur le miroir.
Dans le calme, souvent seul, chacun d’eux fait son apprentissage au miroir en observant tranquillement son image et commence à comprendre que c’est lui-même dans le miroir. Mais quand il constate que des membres du groupe l’observent et commencent à crier, il doit faire preuve de son statut de mâle dominant en frappant son image qui est redevenu un intrus !
Un autre mâle alpha peut alors tenter de calmer sa colère en se livrant à une pseudo-copulation et à un toilettage apaisant.
