Elephants are particularly fond of mud baths. They coat their bodies with a thick layer of wet mud and sometimes lie down in the mud to relax. The calves take advantage of these moments to play.
Mud has several virtues: it allows them to:
- to improve their protection against insects because when the mud dries, it creates a shell that crushes the parasites that live on their skin.
- to protect themselves from the sun.
- to cool them when the water in the mud evaporates.

Les éléphants affectionnent particulièrement les bains de boue. Ils s’enduisent le corps d’une couche épaisse de boue humide et parfois s’y roulent pour se relaxer. Les éléphanteaux profitent de ces moments pour jouer.
La boue a plusieurs vertus : Elle leur permet :
- d'améliorer leur protection contre les insectes car en séchant, la boue crée une carapace écrasant les parasites qui vivent sur leur peau.
- de se protéger du soleil.
- de les rafraichir lors que l’eau contenue dans la boue s’évapore.
