In the middle of the night a mother elephant walks along a forest path accompanied by her son. Upon hearing the leopard’s growl, she lets out numerous loud trumpets and crashes through the foliage in hopes of making him flee. The mother and son elephant arrive dashing in front of the mirror and the leopard. The leopard is hesitant to leave his mirror but eventually flees out of sight of the camera as the elephants continue to approach. In the absence of the leopard, the mother elephant inspects the mirror and begins to charge, kicking up dust and trumpeting. She proceeds to slam the mirror violently with her trunk and tusks. She hits the mirror over dozen times until the mirror cracks down the middle. She gives a final hit, backs up, and inspects her work. Only now does she leave the scene with her son. 25 minutes later the leopard returns to find his mirror and lies down next to it. The next day he returns again, but this time his mirror is wrapped in tarp. He slowly wanders off. He will have to wait a few days to get a new mirror. Here it is important to note that despite the numerous blows to the mirror by the mother elephant, no shards have actually broken off. Using a double sided adhesive attached to plywood, the mirrors are built in such a way as to not endanger the animals’ safety. That being said, Anne-Marie et Xavier Hubert-Brierre always prefer to be cautious when it comes to the animals’ lives, which is why the cracked mirror was covered with tarp immediately and replaced a few days later. Although synthetic mirrors can be used indoors, outdoors they create reflections that make it difficult to see the animals’ images. (Robin Alcorn comment)

(Description de Xavier Hubert-Brierre)
