Lake Superior's Christmas Waves - Canal Park, Duluth, MN

When the weather forecast proved true for strong waves on the big lake, we chose to postpone our Christmas dinner by a day so we could enjoy Lake Superior at her finest. We are so glad we did! We started in Duluth, Minnesota's Canal Park, then traveled up the North Shore to Split Rock Lighthouse and Tettegouche State Park. We're pleased to share some video footage of the lake rockin' on Christmas Day -- we're posting 4 separate videos here on our YouTube Channel and shorter versions on our Facebook page.

During the 2016 Christmas Day storm, the temperatures were mild in the upper 20s (F) but easterly winds were sustained at 35 mph, gusting to 50 mph at times. Conditions were challenging as we were frequently buffeted by strong winds and the thunderous explosions of waves sent spray flying far and wide.

All video footage was recorded, and plays, at actual speed. At times it looks as if the majestic lake is gracefully dancing in slow motion, and at other times it appears to be fiercely power-washing the rugged shorelines. We continue to be humbled by Lake Superior, mesmerized by her waves, and in awe of her raw power.
