How to Ethically Deal with Roosters
Eating meat is one of the best ways humans have to obtain must-needed proteins. However, the meat industry has evolved to become one of the most unsustainable and unethical of all sectors. This is why, for instance, I stopped eating meat altogether about three years ago. And I grew up in Spain, which means very upset aunties and massive FOMO if you don't eat 'canelons' for Christmas.
However, I never considered myself a vegetarian. First, I still ate fish. But more importantly, I also said to myself that I would eat meat as long as I knew where that animal came from, and I could be satisfied with the life and death of the creature I'm about to eat.
As it turns out, this is impossible to verify when buying from the supermarket. But since living in Goongerah, I've been able to eat different type of meat a handful of times. It's been mainly venison, from deer hunted around here, which are a massive problem for native vegetation, sheep that have been raised and killed by friends, duck that I've dealt with myself, and roosters from Hope Seed Farm.
Most of all, I believe that linking a piece of meat to the cycle of life and death, I'm able to better acknowledge the life that has been taken and the effort that it took. When you've killed an animal by yourself, you don't take it lightly anymore.
