Bench Grinder Stand | DIY Grinding Pedestal Build Cheaper Than Harbor Freight's Best!
In this video, I will build a 𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥-𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 for my new Harbor Freight Tools - BAUER 6-inch Bench Grinder with LED Lights – I hope you don't fall for the "LED Lights" part because they are pretty useless!
I will start by apologizing for the super long video, but there are two projects within this video. One is the accelerated rust removal technique using electrolysis and vinegar. This yielded stunning results and is something I will use in other projects. The second was a NEW paint (to me), the Krylon Fusion All-In-One Hammered Finish Spray Paint. That was a little disappointing, but nevertheless, something I will also use in future DIY projects.
So, let's get started with building a custom 𝐃𝐈𝐘 𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥-𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝. I have wanted to add a bench grinder to my garage workshop for a while and have been keeping an eye on several units on Facebook Marketplace with no luck. I continue to see, at least on my side of the woods. Around here, most units hover around $80 to $100. Remind you that these are not NEW. In many cases, two to three decades old. So, needless to say, when Harbor Freight put the BAUER 6-inch 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐞 for $44, I jumped on it.
Now, if you get a bench grinder, you should get a grinder stand. That is because although it is called a bench grinder, these things are known for vibrating and rattling loose all the screws of your workbench. Bench Grinder Stands come in two varieties the four-legged type, which is not my favorite because of the added footprint, and the pedestal kind, which everyone seems to like or prefer.
In this video, I will fabricate a pedestal-style bench grinder stand from scrap metal, and when it is all set and done, my cost was less than $15, which includes paint and everything I used in the build.
𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐃𝐈𝐘 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝
The key to making this 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 on the cheap is scrap metal! I used a disgraded basketball hoop and a large break rotor I salvaged out of the tracking of my local auto parts store. And for clarification, I said in the video that this was from an old F-250 Ford Truck because that is what they told me at the auto parts store. After further examination, there is a chance that this is from an F-150. All I can say is that it is old and it is Ford. I say that with certainty because it is stamped with the FORD logo, whereas most modern stuff says FOMOCO.
Now - I understand that these are not things you find every day in your neighbor's garbage, but neither is a 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 barn find. The moral of the story is BOLO (Be On Look Out!) for things like bed frames and other angle metal pipes over 2 inches in diameter and any scrap metal, especially of heavy gauge. With that said, you could fabricate this Bench Grinder Stand from fence posts or even square mild-steel tubes found at your local big-box store, but probably cheaper at a place like Tractor Supply Company.
As I mentioned in the video, this video is NOT sponsored by Harbor Freight in any shape or form. Still, if you are going to be building stuff around the house, perhaps you should consider getting a MIG welder like the TITANIUM Easy-Flux 125 when it goes on SALE. In just a few projects, it will more than pay for itself. Please don't make the mistake many of my friends have made and go ultra cheap with the CHICAGO ELECTRIC Flux 125 Welder. The green one is substantially better, especially if you are just getting started with welding. I have some TIG welding experience under my belt, but FLUX MIG is relatively new, and there is a learning curve. I think choosing the Vulcan wire from Harbor Freight was one of my mistakes. It creates a lot more splatter and carbon than expected.
At the end of the day, I am pleased with the build and will not hesitate to do it again. Aside from the money-saving factor, the most important thing about a custom 𝐃𝐈𝐘 𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥-𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 is having it fit your workshop, your height, and your requirements instead of you curving your work around the bench grinder stand and its capabilities.
