Recipe for Tuna Casserole | How to Make This Easy, Cheesy, Healthier, Classic Signature Dish!
If you are looking for an easy, cheesy, perhaps a little healthier 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐞, I think I have one that may interest you. With inflation at an all-time high, many viewers have been asking for an affordable, easy-to-make dinner to feed an entire family! Well, food is usually not on my to-do list when it comes to saving or cutting corners! I mean, if you want to save money, you could go to MacDonald and get a mystery chicken sandwich for like $1.5, or stop by Subway for a not-real tuna, tuna sub for $3.00. But always remember that we are what we eat. With that said, you can make this 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 very affordable with budget-minded ingredients, or you can kick it up a notch by using a fresh fish or canned solid white albacore and a healthier option like whole grain or whole wheat pasta. If you follow the recipe, the result will be very satisfying.
𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞
Many people call their recipe for 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 by using egg noodles instead of regular pasta, but I believe there are healthier options other than egg noodles. Today we have all sorts of healthy pasta options like buckwheat spaghetti, red lentil pasta, chickpea pasta, whole wheat, and whole-grain pasta, among others. The same goes for the tuna. I am not only calling but also making this recipe for tuna casserole with canned tuna to be practical. Calling this video recipe a fish casserole is just not that appealing! But know that I first fell in love with this dish while living in the Florida Keys, where Mahi was the fish of choice. Over the years, I have made this will all types of fish. Any muscular and firm fish like Jack, Barracuda, Kingfish, or Mahi will do. However, to make this with fresh fish, including tuna, requires additional time. Since what I do is smoke or grill the fish for about an hour at a very low temperature - 200 degrees or so! That is a video of its own, so for practicality, let's get some Bumble Bee 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐮𝐧𝐚 and make ourselves one fantastic tuna casserole without complicating our lives. Here are the ingredients.

Step #1 - Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and lightly grease a 9x13 casserole dish or baking pan with cooking spray.
Step #2 - We will start by making a sauce! We are doing this first because we need to give it a little time to cool down. Let's melt 2 - Tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan and a bit of oil to keep the butter from burning. On up to temperature, add the chopped onions and bell peppers and cook for 2-3 minutes or until the onions are translucent. We'll then add the garlic and cook it for an additional 30-seconds. Next is the flour. Yes, we are making a roux. While constantly stirring it for about a minute, add the 1.5 - cups of chicken broth. Once everything is well incorporated, add the milk. Stir it for another minute, take it off the stove, and leave it to cool down.
Step #3 - Cooking the pasta. I will be using Barilla's Whole Grain Penne for this tuna casserole recipe. This particular pasta is cooked to perfection in exactly 10-minutes. Any other shape or brand will do. Just make sure to follow the manufacturer's diction for al-dente. We are going to cook the pasta a little more, so don't worry if it feels a little hard for your taste! Once done, strain it a cool it down under the faucet. Let it sit in the strainer for a few minutes for the water to drain, then deposit it into a large mixing bowl.
Step #4 - Let's finish the sauce! After opening the four cans of tuna and thoroughly rinsing the liquid, add the tuna to the sauce and the frozen peas (Optional). Mix everything and add it to the bowl with the pasta. Add the shredded cheese and deposit it into the 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡 after making sure everything is well mixed.
Step #5 - Let's make the topping. Mix 1 - Cup of Vigo Seasoned Bread Crumbs, 1/4 Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese, and 3 Teaspoons Olive Oil. Mix it rapidly until the bread crumbs absorb all the oil. As I mentioned in the video, I am not one to be specific about the brand of condiments, but after trying this many times, and even panko, this undoubtedly takes the recipe to another level! Sprinkle the crumbs over the casserole, bake it for 18-22 minutes and enjoy it!
I hope you try this. It is a 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡 that will impress your family. Thank you for watching, and I'll see you next week with a new recipe!
